Healers have been part of every society in recorded history. Chiropractic began in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa, when D.D. Palmer performed what's considered the first chiropractic adjustment, and he founded the first chiropractic school, now Palmer College of Chiropractic, in 1897.
The core ideas
- Structure and function are connected. How the spine and other joints move affects how comfortably you move and function.
- The body has a natural ability to heal. Care aims to support that, through hands-on treatment, exercise and healthy habits.
- Look at the whole person. Work, posture, activity, sleep and stress all play a part in neck and back problems.
- Conservative care first, when it's appropriate. For many common back and neck problems, hands-on care and exercise are reasonable options to try, and medical care is there when it's needed.
How we practice today
We focus on musculoskeletal problems: neck pain, back pain, headaches related to the neck, sciatica and injuries from accidents, work and sports. Your plan is based on your exam and explained before we start. We work alongside medical doctors, imaging centers and specialists, and we refer you when you need care we don't provide. We don't treat disease, and chiropractic care isn't a replacement for your medical care or vaccinations.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Our doctors are doctors of chiropractic (D.C.), not medical doctors. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
