Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact and experience the world. It's called a "spectrum" because it shows up very differently from person to person. The CDC estimates that about 1 in 31 children in the U.S. has been identified with autism.
What causes autism?
Research points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors that affect early brain development. Large, careful studies have found no link between vaccines and autism, including vaccines that once contained the preservative thimerosal. An earlier version of this article suggested otherwise; that was wrong, and we've removed it.
Getting a diagnosis
Signs can appear in the first two years, such as limited eye contact, delayed speech or not responding to their name. If you have concerns, talk with your child's pediatrician. Early evaluation and support make a real difference for many children and families.
Where to find support
- Your pediatrician or family doctor
- CDC: Autism spectrum disorder
- Georgia's early intervention program, Babies Can't Wait, for children under 3
Our role
Chiropractic care is not a treatment for autism. Like any child, children with autism can have neck or back problems from falls and sports, and we're happy to see them for those, with care adapted to their comfort and sensory needs.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Our doctors are doctors of chiropractic (D.C.), not medical doctors. If you have a medical emergency, call 911.
